Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery option each year. For many women, it can help them feel more confident with their body and overall figure by enhancing the breasts or evening them out. However, if you’re considering breast augmentation, it’s common to have questions. Here are some of the most common ones we hear during consultation so you can make the right choice for you.
Is Breast Augmentation Safe?
Yes, breast augmentation is a very safe procedure when performed by a board certified plastic surgeon. Millions of women have had their breasts augmented with very few complications. Dr. Ellen will do a thorough medical screening during your consultation to plan a successful surgery based on specific factors.
What’s the Difference Between Saline and Silicone Implants?
Saline implants have a silicone shell that is filled with sterile saline (salt water). They are inserted when empty, and are then filled with the saline solution. Silicone implants have a silicone shell and are filled with a silicone gel. This gel closely resembles the normal fat found on the human body. Different types of each type of implant are available, so Dr. Ellen will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each type during your consultation.
What Size Implant is Best For Me?
Dr. Ellen will take into consideration your overall body build, height, weight, shoulder width, and chest circumference. When taken together, these factors will help produce the most attractive outcome for your body type. It’s important to have a general idea of how big you want your breasts to be, but you shouldn’t rely on a specific bra size. Implants are sized differently, so you’ll need to rely on your plastic surgeon’s expertise.
What Happens During Surgery?
Breast augmentation surgery is generally done on an outpatient basis. It requires general anesthesia so you will need someone to drive you home. Dr. Ellen will make a predetermined incision for each breast and insert each implant according to its type. Breast lift procedures can also be performed at this time. Generally, the procedure takes 1 to 3 hours, after which you’ll be fitted with bandages and surgical bra. After surgery, you will be brought to a recovery room for a period of time for monitoring. After this, you will then be allowed to go home to rest.
How Long is the Recovery Time?
You will feel some soreness, swelling, and tightness in the chest area and should limit your activities for a few days. Wearing buttoned shirts will prevent discomfort from putting clothing on over your head and lifting your arms. After a few days, you can return to work but will have to avoid strenuous activates for several weeks to allow for healing. We will monitor your progress throughout the healing period.
How Long Should I wait to Get Pregnant After Breast Surgery?
You should discuss your pregnancy plans with Dr. Ellen before you opt for breast augmentation. Pregnancy and nursing can negatively affect your results, so you might require additional surgery.
