Liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgeries performed each year, especially among men. If you’ve heard of liposuction and are considering your options, then your best bet is meeting with a board-certified plastic surgeon who can help you learn more about the right approach for your goals. In the meantime, here are the basics of liposuction for men and what you should know ahead of your consultation with Dr. Ellen.
What is Liposuction for Men?
Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure that permanently removes fatty tissue from the body. It uses tiny incisions and a cannula, or blunt tube, to break up fat and suction it away with a surgical vacuum. The result is a more defined look with better contours and fewer fatty bulges. It’s a great option if you’re looking to get rid of stubborn fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise, or to put the finishing touches on your weight loss results. Many men also get it because they simply have low body image or want better muscle definition.
Liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures among men. In fact, according to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, liposuction made up 11% of all procedures performed on men in 2020. So, you can rest assured that you’re not alone in pursuing plastic surgery to boost your confidence.
Who’s a Good Candidate for Men’s Liposuction?
Liposuction isn’t for everyone. It’s important to discuss your health history with a board-certified plastic surgeon so you can determine whether liposuction will be safe and effective. Firstly, you should be at or near your ideal weight since weight fluctuations can impact your long-term results. Secondly, you should have good skin elasticity and no stretched, loose skin (if you do, you may need to explore your options for a body lift procedure). Finally, you should be nonsmoking and have no medical conditions that might impact your ability to undergo and recover from surgery. If you fit these criteria and have realistic expectations and a positive outlook, then liposuction might be for you.
What Areas Can Be Treated With Men’s Liposuction?
The key difference in liposuction for men and liposuction for women is the areas treated. Men typically opt for treatment in areas like the chest, love-handles, stomach, chin, and upper arms. It can also be combined with a variety of other surgical procedures like the tummy tuck, male breast reduction, or fat transfer. Liposuction is incredibly versatile and can produce transformative results in the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon.
How Long is Recovery From Men’s Liposuction?
Liposuction recovery is relatively quick compared to other surgical procedures. You can expect to take 1-2 weeks away from work (longer if you work a physical job) and can return to normal activities within about 2-3 weeks. You’ll have limitations on exercise and physical activity for as long as six weeks, however.
During the first two weeks, you can expect swelling and discomfort, but you’ll be given detailed instructions on how to manage it. You’ll also be given a compression garment to wear as much as possible for the first month in order to suppress swelling, prevent fluid buildup, and help the skin adhere to the new contours. Swelling will subside within a few weeks, but it can take about six months for your final results to emerge. Liposuction results are permanent, meaning fat won’t return after your procedure (as long as you maintain a healthy and active lifestyle).
