If you have excess skin on your stomach, this can have a significant impact on your confidence and quality of life. After a tummy tuck, your clothes will fit better and you will feel much better about yourself.
Procedure
A tummy tuck can greatly improve the appearance of stretched abdominal muscles and a sagging or protruding abdomen. This procedure is recommended for men and women who have recently lost weight, such as after pregnancy since this can stretch out the skin of your stomach. Depending on the amount of excess skin you have, Dr. Ellen will recommend a mini, full, or extended tummy tuck. She can also combine your tummy tuck with liposuction for a more dramatic contour and smoother appearance of the lower body.
The Recovery Process
After your surgery, your body will need a lot of time to heal, as much as eight weeks, so it is important to follow your surgeon’s advice.
Avoid Physical Activity
For the first few days after surgery, avoid all physical activity so that your incision will close properly; even bending or lifting can put pressure on your abdomen and strain your healing stitches. This is important to consider if you are a mother since tummy tucks are common after childbirth. Although it may be difficult to resist picking up your child, even just 25 pounds can cause swelling and bleeding.
Ask for Help
For the first 2-3 weeks, you will need help with daily chores or activities that may seem simple. However, it is important to be cautious since any form of stretching or pressure around the abdomen can impact your healing process. Don’t be afraid to ask for help carrying groceries, walking your pets, moving laundry, vacuuming, and dusting the house.
Healthy Diet
Keeping up with a healthy diet and exercise routine is vital. Avoid fatty or processed foods and stick to a diet of mainly fruits and vegetables, protein, and other foods rich in vitamin C.
Recovery Tips
One of the most important things to do before and after surgery is to quit smoking. The first few days are when you will be the most sore so before your surgery, set up a comfortable area you can recover with plenty of comfy clothes and things to keep you occupied like books and movies. You may also want to invest in a hand-held showerhead and/or bathroom chair to make showering easier.
