Pregnancy takes a tremendous toll on a woman’s body and the breasts are often the most affected. Changes to the breasts can continue after childbirth (post-partum) which can make it difficult for new moms to feel confident in their bodies. If you are bothered about breast changes post-partum, Dr. Ellen can help.
How Does Pregnancy Affect Your Breasts?
As early as one week after conception, progesterone and estrogen levels rise quickly and cause swelling in the breasts. This breast growth is necessary to make room for milk ducts. In preparation for breast milk production, the nipples and areolas may also grow and darken. Secretory tissues and mammary glands also grow, and it is common to gain a full cup size increase by the sixth week of pregnancy. The extra breast tissue can add two pounds to a woman’s chest which causes stretch marks, sagging, and back or neck aches.
Post-Partum Breast Changes
Once you have given birth, your body is ready to breastfeed your child, regardless or whether you choose to breastfeed or bottle-feed with formula. Breast milk production causes more fullness and increased breast volume. Even after estrogen and progesterone levels go back down to a normal level, it is common that the breasts remain larger than they were pre-pregnancy.
Treatments for Post-Partum Breasts
Many women choose to have breast surgery after giving birth and there are several treatment options available, depending on how your breasts have changed.
Breast Lift
If pregnancy has left you with sagging breasts and elongated or downward-facing nipples, a breast lift can be performed to lift your breasts for a firmer, perkier appearance. Excess skin will be removed, and the remaining tissue will be tightened and reshaped to enhance your appearance.
Breast Augmentation
Post-partum hormonal changes can also cause your breasts to lose volume or develop a flat look. Sometimes the breasts grow asymmetrically during pregnancy, and this causes many women to feel self-conscious. A breast augmentation with implants will create fuller, larger breasts. This procedure can also be combined with a breast lift to enlarge and lift the breasts.
Mommy Makeover
These breast procedures can also be incorporated into a mommy makeover, which targets all areas of concerns for new moms. A tummy tuck and body contouring procedures are also part of the mommy makeover, and this combination of surgeries helps new moms regain the curves and body shape they had pre-pregnancy.
