When looking at your facial plastic surgery options, it can feel like there are too many to choose from. That’s because plastic surgery has come a long way when it comes to customizing your results! Two of the most popular facial procedures are the facelift and neck lift, however, and it can be difficult to figure out which one would benefit you most. Here’s a guide as you plan your consultation with Dr. Ellen.
What is a Facelift?
Although the name implies this technique can rejuvenate the entire face, the facelift focuses mainly on the mid-face. This usually includes rejuvenating and lifting the cheeks, smile lines, and jowls, which are some of the first places to show signs of aging. This happens through incisions that are hidden within the hairline and around the ears, which allows access to the tissues underlying the skin. Sagging fat can be repositioned for a more defined profile, and muscles can be gradually tightened with sutures for a younger, more lifted appearance. After any excess skin is removed, the incisions are closed.
What is a Neck lift?
A neck lift follows a very similar pattern to the facelift, but uses incisions underneath the chin or behind the ears. A neck lift is effective at correcting a sagging or soft jawline as a result of excess skin and fat. It can sometimes accompany liposuction for more refinement of the jaw. After fat is removed, skin can be excised to reduce a ‘turkey wattle’ or jowls. Additionally, neck muscles can be tightened using sutures to reduce the appearance of neck bands as a result of looseness.
Which is best for me?
Both the neck lift and facelift can benefit patients showing signs of aging, but in different ways. Generally, the facelift can correct aging in the midface, while a neck lift can correct aging in the lower face. Fortunately, these procedures can be performed in one surgical session for even better results. During a consultation with Dr. Ellen, she can assess your goals and anatomy and discuss your options for facial rejuvenation, and whether you will benefit most from surgical or non-surgical techniques.
