In many ways, preparing well for your breast lift is just as important as the recovery process, or the surgery, itself. Taking the necessary steps during your consultation and before your surgery will help you avoid complications and feel more confident as your surgery date approaches. Dr. Ellen Janetzke can answer any of your questions during a consultation, but here are some of the need-to-know basics about breast lifts.
Your Breast Lift Consultation
During your consultation with Dr. Ellen, you will discuss your expectations for your breast lift surgery. Dr. Ellen can explain the results you can reasonably expect from the procedure as well as the recovery process, scarring, side effects, and risks involved with a breast lift. Your breast lift consultation is your chance to ask Dr. Ellen any questions you have about the surgery and recovery period. For this reason, many patients find it helpful to bring a list of questions along to the appointment to make sure they do not forget any important details.
In addition to results and expectations, Dr. Ellen will also physically examine your breasts. This includes the position of your nipples and areolae as well as the firmness or degree of skin laxity. This allows her to plan for your surgery and determine the techniques that will yield your best possible results. As needed, photos may also be taken.
Finally, Dr. Ellen will review your health history to be sure that breast lift surgery is a safe and suitable choice for you. Be prepared to list any medications or supplements you take as well as any medical conditions, allergies, previous surgeries, or personal or family history of breast cancer.
What to Do Before Breast Lift Surgery
There are some steps that Dr. Ellen will advise you to take to prepare for your breast lift after your consultation. Some patients may be advised to schedule a mammogram so your medical team can compare the appearance of your breast tissue before and after surgery; this allows them to more accurately interpret future mammograms.
You should also make arrangements for care after your surgery. You will need a trusted friend or family member to drive you home after surgery and care for you in the early stages of recovery. If you have children or pets, it is important to arrange for assistance caring for them during your recovery as well.
Finally, you may need to purchase some supplies to prepare for surgery. This includes nutritious and easy-to-prepare meals for the recovery period, comfortable clothing, and books, magazines, or other forms of entertainment. Dr. Ellen may also advise you to pick up prescriptions or over-the-counter medications prior to surgery.
What to Avoid Before a Breast Lift
Before your breast lift, you should avoid taking certain medications. This includes blood thinners or anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin. Some supplements or vitamins can also affect bleeding, including vitamins C or E, St. John’s wort, or omega 3 fatty acids. These should also be avoided. During your consultation, Dr. Ellen can advise which of your medications or supplements you should stop taking or modify.
If you smoke, you should also stop as far in advance of your surgery as possible. Smoking will slow down your healing process and increase your risk of complications.
