Bringing a baby into the world is an absolute miracle. However, many mothers deal with changes to their bodies that can affect their self esteem. Most mothers typically end up with sagging breasts, loose skin, and protruding stomachs. But there is still hope if you want to have your pre-pregnancy body back.
A Mommy Makeover can take care of all three of these concerns at one time. If you are reading this, then you are probably wondering what recovery time will be like after the procedure. It’s totally normal to be worried about surgery. Just remember, you will enjoy permanent results after just a few weeks of downtime! Most patients say that their biggest regret is the fact that they waited so long to undergo the surgery.
How long your recovery timeline really is will also depend on you and your body. Let’s look at what you can expect after a Mommy Makeover.
The First Week Post-Surgery
You will be expected to rest for the first week after surgery. If you have small children in the home, ask for assistance. You can expect to feel numbness, tightening, and tingling sensations around the areas that were worked on. Some bruising and swelling are normal. You will likely feel uncomfortable and sore for the first week. However, your doctor will want you to move around every couple of hours to get your blood flowing. You may be given medication to help with the pain.
The Following Weeks
Most women can return to normal work activities between two and four weeks after surgery. You will likely still feel muscle and skin tightness as well as a general sensitivity around the areas the surgery fixed.
As you go into your fourth week, you will begin to feel a lot better. You will be able to resume light duties, as long as you make sure they are not too strenuous. You’ll want to limit how much you lift to 20 pounds for about six weeks, including children. Your doctor may clear you for light exercise around your fourth week.
When will the surgery be completely healed?
For most patients, it takes about three to six months until they feel completely healed. Some patients mention experiencing minor swelling and lingering soreness for a few months. It could take a year or longer before these minor sensations are gone.
The last phase of healing may bring the following feelings:
- Sensations of tingling, numbness, pins and needles, and soreness
- Some swelling when you first wake up
- Changes in scarring as you begin to heal- some scars may start off dark and raised but will flatten and fade over time
Tips for a Fast Recovery
While most patients can resume normal activities after three months, slow down if you start to feel too uncomfortable. Always keep all wounds properly dressed for as long as the plastic surgeon tells you too. Consult with your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. They are there to help at all times.
Undergoing surgery is a huge decision. A Mommy Makeover will still require a short period of recovery. However, it will be a decision that you will enjoy for many years to come.
