How Does Liposuction Work?

For many individuals, diet and exercise are enough to remove pockets of stubborn fat and improve their contour.  For others, pockets of stubborn fat can be a challenge to get rid of! Liposuction is a commonly talked about procedure that can remove your stubborn fat once and for all. But how exactly does it work?

The treatment areas

The first step to receiving liposuction is to ensure that you are a good candidate and that your areas of concern can be effectively treated with it. Liposuction allows for precise sculpting, so it can be used virtually anywhere on the body, even in smaller areas such as under the chin. The most popular areas for liposuction include the abdominal area, the flanks, thighs, bra area, and upper arms. It can also be used to optimize another contouring procedure like the tummy tuck or breast lift. It is important to know that liposuction alone will only treat your stubborn fat. If excess skin and tissue are causing your poor contour, Dr. Ellen can suggest a different treatment option for you.

The procedure process

Liposuction will be performed under general anesthesia or sedation to ensure your comfort during the process. The liposuction procedure process involves tiny incisions where a cannula will be inserted. The cannula will then be moved in a gentle back and forth motion, breaking apart your fat cells and removing them with a suction mechanism. Dr. Ellen uses liposuction techniques with great precision to not only remove fat but to sculpt a more appealing figure. Depending on the size of your treatment area, this process can take about 45 minutes to two hours.

The recovery and results

After your procedure, Dr. Ellen will provide you with all the instructions you need for a sucessful recovery. This includes a few days of rest and wearing a compression garment while you heal. After your recovery, you can enjoy your improved contour, but to make sure your results are long lasting, it’s important that you maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise. Your fat cells cannot grow back once they are removed, but weight can still be distributed to untreated areas of your body, distorting your results. By committing to a healthy diet and workout routine, you can enjoy long-lasting results from your procedure.
