A lot of assumptions are made about plastic surgery including who can perform it, who gets it, and why it’s done. By debunking popular myths, you can be sure you’re provided with more accurate plastic surgery information instead of falling victim to the misconceptions!
Only real plastic surgeons can perform plastic surgery procedures
Unfortunately, not all surgeons performing plastic surgery have gone through the proper training and education required for safe, effective results. In fact, anyone with a valid medical license can call themselves a plastic surgeon and perform plastic surgery. Don’t be shy about asking your surgeon for proof that they are actually qualified to be performing the procedures they offer. Make sure that the surgeon you choose is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery to ensure that they have had the necessary education and training, specifically plastic surgery.
All plastic surgery board certifications are the same
The reality is that not all board certifications are the same! While seeing a surgeon that calls themselves “board-certified” is a good first step, you might need to do further investigation to determine what board they were certified by. Only those certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) should be trusted with plastic surgery procedures. Other boards, such as the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS), are not the same and do not require the same level of education and training in plastic surgery. Unlike the ABPS, the ABCS is not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties that creates a uniform examination process for medical practices. The ABCS is a self-designated board made up of members from different training programs in areas of medicine other than plastic surgery. Boards other than the ABPS are not required to perform plastic surgery in an accredited operating facility, which can put your health at risk if a complication were to occur!
Only women get plastic surgery
This is a common misconception surrounding plastic surgery. Although plastic surgery is more commonly performed on women, men can benefit from a number of procedures as well! Men can suffer from some of the same body issues as women including excess fat, loose, sagging skin, and wrinkles. Many plastic surgeons offer certain procedures targeting men’s issues. Dr. Ellen Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery offers facelift, tummy tuck, breast reduction, liposuction, and NeoGraft procedures and treatments specifically for men.
Plastic surgery is all about beauty
Another common myth is that plastic surgery is just about beauty. While many procedures do aim solely for cosmetic improvement, others work towards improving the function and structure of the body. They can also improve birth defects like cleft palates, reconstruct the breast after cancer, and correct the hands or nose after injury.
