Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures done today. The majority of women are happy with their implants, with little to no issues. However, the news of Hugh Hefner’s wife, Crystal Hefner, announcing that she removed her breast implants because they were making her ill, is causing quite a stir in the plastic surgery community. So, can breast implants really make you sick?
The answer is no. Doctors in the plastic surgery field claim that there is absolutely no scientific evidence that supports the idea that breast implants or breast implant leakage can cause any type of autoimmune illness. There have also been many cancer studies done that report there is no difference in the rate of women who get cancer, regardless of whether they have breast implants or not.
So, why do some women decide to get their breast implants removed? If their implants have deflated or leaked, they may decide to just have them removed and not replaced. Some women just decide that their breast implants are too large for their liking and they decide to return to their natural breast size. Whatever the reason, breast implant removal is a safe procedure. Techniques for breast implant removal have become more advanced over the years, with smaller, shorter scars now being used. Sometimes, this surgery can also be done without general anesthesia.
Most patients experience very little downtime after having their breast implants removed, and any pain can be controlled with prescribed pain medication.
